Prevent Kid's Cavities

Keep Little Smiles Bright

Children are prone to decay and cavities for a number of reasons, including diets high in sugar and the lack of proper dexterity to brush their own teeth. Luckily, dental sealants from your kids dentist at We Care Dental Care can help little ones avoid cavities. With dental sealants from Dr. Burkitt, you can protect your child’s teeth from decay with a simple, non-invasive procedure. Call us today to schedule an appointment!

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are designed to prevent cavities by creating a physical barrier between your child’s teeth and the acid that is responsible for tooth decay. Sealants consist of a special type of dental resin that is applied to each tooth in liquid form. Then, the resin is hardened until it creates a clear plastic barrier to prevent bacteria, food particles, and acid from directly contacting the enamel.

Sealants are typically only applied to the molars and premolars because these teeth have deeper grooves and pits, as well as a larger surface area, so they are more likely to decay. This preventive dentistry treatment can be used on both baby (primary) teeth as well as adult teeth, and they last up to 10 years with proper placement.

The Dental Sealants Process

The process of applying dental sealants is very simple and non-invasive. First, your child’s mouth will be cleaned to remove any bacteria, food debris, and plaque. Next, cotton balls or another similar absorbent material will be used to keep the area dry. Dr. Burkitt will paint the sealant resin onto your child’s teeth and once it is applied, he will use a special UV light to harden and bond it. The entire process takes just a few minutes and it is completely painless.

Are Dental Sealants Right For My Child?

If your child has a history of cavities, dental sealants are one of the best ways to prevent future decay. While you should still focus on proper oral hygiene and a low-sugar diet to help reduce the risk of cavities, sealants can be a powerful tool to fight back against tooth decay. Dental sealants are also often covered by dental insurance plans for children who are under the age of 18. We recommend checking with your dental insurance provider to see if dental sealants are covered by your plan.
