Keep Your Little One’s Smile Bright
Tooth-Colored Fillings
Even with proper oral hygiene, children are still at high risk for developing cavities and decay. If your little one has a cavity, it’s important to get proper treatment as quickly as possible. At your Roanoke dentist, Dr. Burkitt treats cavities with tooth-colored fillings to ensure that your child’s smile remains healthy and happy after treatment.
What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings are an alternative to traditional amalgam fillings, which are made out of a blend of metals and can discolor your child’s smile after treatment. In contrast, composite fillings are made out of a durable, tooth-colored dental resin to preserve your child’s smile and treat their cavities.
What Should I Expect During the Process?
With numbing agents, fillings are quick and painless and the process usually only takes an hour. First, Dr. Burkitt will numb your child’s teeth and gums. We also offer Nitrous Oxide, which may be a good choice if your child is particularly nervous or anxious about the treatment.
Next, Dr. Burkitt will use specialized tools to remove damaged and decayed enamel, then he will clean the tooth. Next, he will select a tooth-colored dental resin and apply it directly onto the tooth to keep the structure strong and intact. The resin will be shaped until it looks just like the structure of your child’s natural tooth, and then it will be hardened with a UV light to complete the procedure.
What Are The Benefits Of Tooth-Colored Fillings?
- Natural appearance – Because Dr. Burkitt uses a dental resin that matches your child’s tooth perfectly, the filling will look just like part of their natural tooth, and it will be completely indistinguishable from the rest of their tooth structure.
- Contains no mercury – While the mercury used in metal-amalgam fillings has been shown to be safe, mercury is still a toxic metal, and its use in fillings makes some parents nervous. With tooth-colored fillings, you won’t have to worry!
- Requires the removal of less enamel – The composite resin used for tooth-colored fillings can bond more tightly to the teeth compared to metal fillings. This allows for more conservative treatment and the removal of less enamel.
- Long-lasting results – A composite filling can easily last 10-15 years or longer with proper care, ensuring your child’s smile remains healthy for years to come.
